Without a doubt 2012 has been a good year for movies, having said that I am still trying to find a way to unsee Battleship :)

What's been your favourite, worst or missed opportunity 2012 movie ?

Favourite(s)
Avengers Assemble - worth the wait and finally a decent movie Hulk.
The Grey - An extremely powerful and emotive movie. Liam Neesons finest performance.
The Raid Redemption - brutal, visceral  Indonesian action movie. Incredible  almost balletic fight sequences.
Dark Knight Rises - yes it has it's problems but it is a fitting end to what has been a powerhouse trilogy by Chris Nolan.

Missed Opportunities - movies that should have been a whole lot better ;)
Prometheus - I really wanted so much more from this movie but it's muddled message and lazy characterisations let it down.  Superb visuals though
John Carter - I was so stoked that Edgar Rice Borroughs pulp novels were getting some attention, but for me the resulting movie was a let down. A lead actor who was more wooden than a lumber yard didn't help. And would it have hurt to have a red sky on Barsoom ?

Worst
Battleship
Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter

Movies I'm waiting to see
Cloud Atlas, The Hobbit
  • Mood: Movingon
  • Reading: The Lair by James Herbert

Lincoln was an excellent movie, Daniel Day-Lewis was top notch in his portrayal of the president. he is has been nominated for Best Actor.

Also, living in the state of Illinois, Land of Lincoln it's required.

I saw a statue of Lincoln in London, Hyde Park?

Looking forward to 2013 movies.

Cheers, Mike

I have heard good things about Lincoln, unfortunately it's not released here until Jan 25th.

As "artists" I appreciate the production settings and the work that goes into setting the scenes with such detail of these times. The makeup and the period of clothing pulls you into a period of the 1860's. I thought it was a good historical movie.

Hm. Tough call. I may have to go with "Looper", just for being well done and fairly fresh SF. And it wasn't a sequel - a rarity in Hollywood these days!

But coming up a very close second is the Avengers movie. I honestly didn't expect to like it... but with Joss at the helm, I should have had more faith. A really solid superhero flick and just a well done action movie.

I missed out on seeing Looper as I had a dose of the Flu :( but will definitely be picking it up on Blu Ray in late January.

Biggest disappointment: Prometheus. Hands down.

Best film for me - Skyfall! I hate James Bond, cannot stand the character and all his works - but Skyfall swung it for me. This is the best Bond film ever made! Why? Plot is simple; action is well orcestrated - not over the top because IT MUST BE, and there is proper british humour in it; in addition, we see Daniel Craig play Bond as an ordinary flawed man - not a smarmy superheroic git as in most incarnations; and at last he has humour to him!!! Also all the Bond rubbish is out - no silly gadgets (invisible car anyone ;)), no absurd villain, no slapper Bond Girls - hell even the intro hardly had any - and I felt "YES!!" Decent! Prometheus was the disappointer - it promised so much but became so mediocre. I was devastated. Dredd 3D was a surprise - shame it flopped but I thought it was a damn decent effort!

If he means the Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn, that was some imaginative and interesting work, being was just extra characterization via a web only on Youtube. I enjoy the tiered inclusiveness of the franchise if one cares to do more than simply play the games.
