Nope not a vague question at all I use Lightwave 3D to create my images. In which I import a 3d model, set up the camera, composition and lighting. When ready I tell LW to draw or "render" the image. The software then works out how the light from the scene's light source interacts with the shapes, textures and shaders in order to generate the image. Scenes with a lot of shiny surfaces and refelections can take hours.
